…it came in a variety of shapes and sizes, but 35mm was the most popular, so called due to its width. For photographers after better quality, there were larger cameras that took larger film sizes. When digital cameras arrived, cost and technological limits restricted them to small sensors. But, over time, sensor sizes grew until 35mm – or full-frame as it became known – was common. Yet some photographers strived for better quality. So, the GFX System was born, offering a sensor area approximately 70% larger than a full-frame model, without adding any significant bulk or losing key functionality…
…which is why the GFX System offers More Than Full Frame

A larger sensor means room for more pixels – up to 102 million of them, in fact. You get more detail, more sharpness and higher image quality than a full frame sensor. On top of a large pixel count, the sensor design offers optimised light-gathering capabilities for more consistent results across the whole frame. When ultimate image quality is needed, GFX System cameras have a Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode. Here, 16 images are taken and combined into a single 400-megapixel image to deliver unparalleled detail.

GFX System cameras can record more information in light and dark parts of an image compared to full frame cameras thanks to their enhanced dynamic range. High-contrast scenes including highlights and shadows will be recorded with more detail, so results more accurately reflect the actual scene.

Full frame cameras typically offer 12- or 14-bit colour files, but GFX System cameras provide 16-bit files, delivering at least twice as many colours for far greater accuracy. GFX System cameras feature Fujifilm’s unique Film Simulation modes, which digitally recreate some of the most popular analogue films made throughout our 90-year history. These modes deliver stunning results straight out of camera – no need for time-consuming post-production.

The GFX System’s large format sensor offers unique visual characteristics compared to a full-frame model. This includes greater separation between background and subject for a 3D look, particularly on portrait images. GFX System lenses are also designed to enhance these out-of-focus ‘bokeh’ areas. Rounded blades in the lens aperture design help create beautiful, super-smooth effects. Results are further enhanced by AI-powered subject detection autofocus, which ensures your subjects remain pin-sharp on every frame.

They may be larger format, but GFX System cameras don’t place any restriction on your creativity. In fact, they enhance it. The larger resolution allows greater flexibility when it comes to cropping in post-production, plus powerful in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) lets you carry on making images when light levels get low – even without a tripod. All GFX System cameras are highly portable, robust and weather-resistant, so you can keep being creative even when the elements are working against you.

GFX System cameras aren’t just for still images, they’re perfect for video too. A broad range of lenses can be attached to the bodies via adapters to ensure the perfect look. Professional video features are also in plentiful supply, including F-Log and Raw video output for ultimate flexibility in post-production. The latest GFX System cameras offer native compatibility with Frame.io Camera to Cloud, so files can be shared in real time, ready for collaboration and editing.
