(Photo by Alessandro Volders \/ @cyclingmedia_agency).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Light heavyweight\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, Alessandro took the XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR out to work on a photoshoot with professional cyclist Pierre de Froidmont.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI decided to try the lens out with an athlete who had just come back from the summer game,\u201d Alessandro describes. \u201cHe\u2019s a mountain biker and I\u2019ve been making a documentary about his season. I often use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fujifilm-x.com\/en-gb\/products\/lenses\/xf50-140mmf28-r-lm-ois-wr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR<\/a>\u202f\u2013 and it felt almost the same weight. Of course, this new lens is bigger because it\u2019s a 500mm focal length, but the weight was really manageable.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, weighing in at only 1335g and measuring just 255.5mm in length, the XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR handles more like a mid-telephoto lens \u2013 which is a real boon for photographers who work on location. But with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 762mm, it\u2019s a highly specialised tool, unlocking previously unimaginable images for a lens of this size and weight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can imagine carrying this in my backpack all day long,\u201d Alessandro continues. &nbsp;<br>\u201cLenses like this are normally super heavy and really big \u2013 you almost have to carry another bag just for that lens. That\u2019s why I also tried it in video mode. I thought the tracking looked pretty smooth, so I wanted to see how it went and it worked brilliantly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a fast, silent linear motor driving the XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR\u2019s autofocus mechanism, and on-lens features to limit the focusing range and reduce hunting, Alessandro could be sure of not missing a moment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, the advanced lens construction \u2013 21 elements in 14 groups, including five ED and two Super ED elements \u2013 enables the XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR to resolve effectively for 40-megapixel X Series sensors, such as those found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fujifilm-x.com\/en-gb\/products\/cameras\/x-t5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FUJIFILM X-T5<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fujifilm-x.com\/en-gb\/products\/cameras\/x-h2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X-H2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fujifilm-x.com\/en-gb\/products\/cameras\/x-t50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X-T50<\/a>. The stabilisation allowed me to work at the shutter speed I wanted.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retaining the ability to work handheld is a dealbreaker for Alessandro, whose photography is defined by thinking on his feet and rapidly setting up his equipment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor sure, you would have more stabilisation if you used a tripod, but I almost never do because I\u2019m always in a rush.
