For me, workshops are exactly those kinds of places. The smell of wood, long tradition, the tools, the concentration in the movements – and above all the people who fill it all with life. People who have mastered their craft, work with dedication, and have stories to tell. All of it tells a story – long before the shutter is pressed.

CLASSIC CHROME has been my first choice for such reportages for years. The clean, documentary look focuses on what’s important – no filters, no sugarcoating. And that’s exactly what makes CLASSIC CHROME so special to me.

At the same time, CLASSIC CHROME is incredibly flexible: whether on the street, at the lakeside, or in the middle of a workshop, the Film Simulation easily masters the transition between different lighting and color conditions. Fujifilm itself describes it as an „imaginary Film Simulation“ inspired by the look of classic 20th-century photojournalism magazines.
Unlike PROVIA or PRO Neg., which are known for their clean, clear colors, CLASSIC CHROME focuses on restraint: muted tones, cool shadows, and a reduced magenta effect. The result is a color profile that does not push itself into the foreground but allows the moment to take effect.

This restraint gives CLASSIC CHROME a sense of seriousness and calm. Especially with documentary or reportage-style subjects, this creates a look that does not appear staged, but authentic and focused.

And yet, as subtle as the simulation may seem at first glance, it gives the images a depth and character that you can feel. Precisely because it never seems intrusive, I trust CLASSIC CHROME when it comes to telling stories authentically.

My FS RECIPE: Salty Skipper

I named my CLASSIC CHROME FS RECIPE “Salty Skipper”, a subtle reference to rugged sailors, but also to the character of the look: rough, honest, maritime.

This FS RECIPE is ideal for high-contrast environments, such as direct sunlight outdoors, but also for soft lighting situations with a mixture of natural light and artificial lighting in workshops. I work with DR200 to preserve more detail in the highlights while maintaining enough depth in the shadows.

The colors are deliberately maritime: COLOR CHROME FX BLUE set to “STRONG” deepens the characterful blue tones of CLASSIC CHROME – sky, water, shadow areas – without them looking unnatural. This is complemented by a slightly warmer white balance, which ensures a rounded, harmonious contrast, especially with wood, skin tones, and small color details.

+4 COLOR emphasizes this effect without losing the classic restraint of CLASSIC CHROME. The look remains realistic – but with character.

A fine, weak film grain (GRAIN EFFECT: WEAK, SMALL) adds a subtle vintage texture and a tangible feel to the image. It gives the image a tactile quality that pairs well with scenes of craftsmanship without being intrusive.

The TONE CURVE is adjusted so that the highlights are slightly suppressed (HIGHLIGHT: -1) and the shadows are raised (SHADOW: +2). This provides more detail in the highlights and density in the shadows – ideal when working both outdoors in sunlight and indoors.

The WHITE BALANCE is deliberately corrected with restraint (AUTO / R: 0, B: -3) – this gives the images a subtle warmth and adds a little more depth to the wood tones. Together with +1 SHARPNESS and deactivated smoothing, the image remains clear but not exaggerated.

“Salty Skipper” therefore a flexible, robust FS RECIPE for reportages with varying light conditions and a wide range of subjects.
