Features Common to All X Series Cameras

The MENU OK button is used to access deeper levels of camera functionality beyond what is offered by function buttons, dials, and switches.

  • Named menu tabs are what you use to change capture settings. Push the Focus Lever left to scroll by tab (so you don’t have to scroll through every function to get to the next page), push right on the Focus Lever to access desired features and press MENU OK to select.
  • The wrench icon indicates SET UP and features settings including Power Management, Button/Dial Setting and Screen Set-Up. Choose DISP. CUSTOM SETTING from the SCREEN SET-UP menu to select what information shows on the EVF/LCD.
  • Finally, the MY menu is a customized menu that you create based on your most frequently accessed menu items. Add and rank to move them in any order you like and remove them under USER SETTING in the SET UP menu.

The DRIVE button gives you access to burst shooting, bracketing, single frame, Advanced Filters, and more. On the X-Pro3, Drive functions are set using the dedicated button on the back of the camera.

The photometry/metering setting determines how the camera meters exposure. On the X-Pro3, the top-plate Fn button is set to access photometry settings as default and settings can also be changed through the SHOOTING SETTING menu.

AE-L and AF-L buttons allow you to lock either the exposure or autofocus in a specific part of the scene, allowing you to recompose while maintaining that exposure or focus area. Assign the AE-L/AF-L buttons to AE LOCK ONLY, AF LOCK ONLY, or AE/AF LOCK, depending on your preferences. These can be turned on/off when the button is pressed, then pressed again, or to activate only while the button is pressed down. The functionality is changed by pressing MENU OK > SET UP > BUTTON/DIAL SETTING.

The white balance button allows you to select WB options that match your light source. You can also customize to create your own shade of white or select a specific kelvin value, which is a measure of the color temperature of light. The default setting for quick WB access on the X-Pro3 is a swipe right gesture on touchscreen LCD.

Personalizing Your Camera

Many aspects of the X-Pro3 can be customized to suit your preferences, such as controls, displays, and shooting modes.

Controls, Swipes, and Dials

Customize the behavior of the camera’s function buttons and touchscreen swipe gestures.

  • Press and hold the DISP BACK button to go to the FUNCTION (Fn) SETTING screen.
  • Scroll through the various Fn buttons and other controls, including the gesture controls that work via the X-Pro3’s LCD screen, scrolling right to change the control’s default behavior.

Customizing Viewfinder and Viewscreen Information

The information you see when you compose a scene can be changed so only the data you need is shown.

  • Press MENU OK and scroll down to the SET UP menu tab.
  • Choose SCREEN SET-UP setting and scroll to DISP. CUSTOM SETTING.
  • Select either OVF (optical viewfinder) or EVF/LCD (electronic viewfinder and LCD screen).
  • Choose the items you’d like to see in the viewfinder and on the camera’s screen.

Customizing the Q Menu

  • The Q Menu gives you information at a glance and quick access to camera settings. You can also change what’s on the Q Menu screen to suit your way of working.
  • Hold down the Q button for a couple of seconds; the customization screen will appear.
  • Choose the menu item location you want to customize and press MENU OK. Find the function you’d like to appear in this menu location and press MENU OK.
  • Repeat the above steps for each menu location you want to change. Press DISP BACK to finish.

Customizing the Hidden LCD

The X-Pro3 has a small LCD panel on the rear of the main screen that lets you shoot in a more traditional style. Rather than the live view of the main LCD, it displays only shooting settings, such as shutter speed, white balance, and battery life. By default, the hidden LCD displays the current Film Simulation mode, but it can be customized to show up to eight other settings, too.

  • Press MENU OK and scroll to the SET UP menu, then find SCREEN SET-UP, and press MENU OK.
  • In the SCREEN SETTING menu scroll down to the third page and find SUB MONITOR, then press MENU OK.
  • In the SUB MONITOR menu, choose the CLASSIC or STANDARD option. CLASSIC displays the Film Simulation mode you’ve set, while STANDARD allows you to choose the camera settings displayed.
  • On STANDARD, press MENU OK and pick either STILL MODE or MOVIE MODE, then press MENU OK.
  • Finally, scroll to the setting you want to change, press MENU OK, then choose the setting to replace it.

Customizing Film Simulation Modes

You’ve probably discovered your camera’s Film Simulation modes by now, but did you know you can customize these to your own tastes?

  • Press the Q button to display the Q Menu.
  • Adjust highlights, shadows, and color saturation with the H Tone, S Tone, and Color options using the rear command dial.

You can save these new settings as a custom preset for instant recall.

  • Press MENU OK, navigate to the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu, and choose EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING.
  • croll right and choose a custom preset number.
  • Scroll right again, and if you want to rename the setting so it’s more memorable, choose EDIT CUSTOM NAME, input the name, and press SET. Now select SAVE CURRENT SETTINGS. The camera will ask you to choose MENU OK to confirm.

TIP: One of the most important shortcuts to create is a button for PREVIEW EXP./WB IN MANUAL MODE. Access and turn ON to see live view and all setting changes for exposure and white balance; set to WB only for viewing white balance setting changes; turn off when shooting with strobes in a studio setting.

Focusing Modes

Focus Point Location and Size

The active focusing area used by your X-Pro3 can be changed in size and moved around the frame. Using the Focus Lever, choose from Single Point (highly selective), Zone (for erratically moving subjects), and Wide/Tracking (uses the whole frame). To move the active point or zone, or change its size:

  • Move or press the Focus Lever.
  • Move the Focus Lever to shift the focus point/area up, down, left, or right.
  • Press the Focus Lever then rotate the sub-command dial to change the size of the focus point/area.
  • Press MENU OK or half press the shutter release button.

TIP: By default, swiping up on the rear touchscreen permits quick access to Single Point, Zone, Wide/Tracking, and ALL.

TIP: When in Manual Focus mode, access a shortcut to DIGITAL SPLIT IMAGE or FOCUS PEAKING HIGHLIGHT, by pressing and holding the sub-command dial until the desired focusing aide appears; press and hold again to change it.  A quick press of the sub-command dial brings up the FOCUS MAGNIFICATION for fine-tuning your focus.

TIP: Switch on AF+MF from the AF/MF SETTING menu and you’ll be able to focus manually just by turning the lens focus barrel – no change of focus mode necessary.

TIP: Did you know that pressing the Focus Lever while you’re adjusting the focus point moves it back to the center of the frame?

Custom AF-C Modes

The X-Pro3 tracks and focuses on moving objects differently, depending on the kind of focusing behavior specified in AF-C (continuous) mode.

  • Using the focus mode selector on the front left of the camera, put the X-Pro3 in AF-C mode, then press MENU OK, and navigate to the AF/MF SETTING menu.
  • Choose AF-C CUSTOM SETTINGS, then choose a preset 1-5 based on the action you’re shooting.
  • You can also set up your own continuous focus preset using the sixth setting.

TIP: Switch on AF+MF from the AF/MF SETTING menu and you’ll be able to focus manually just by turning the lens focus barrel – no change of focus mode necessary.

Advanced Hybrid Multi Viewfinder

The X-Pro3 features a unique viewfinder, which can be switched between optical and electronic modes at the flick of the viewfinder selector lever on the front of the camera.

Optical Viewfinder

The optical viewfinder (OVF) gives a real-world, real-time view of the world, just as you’d see with a traditional rangefinder camera.

  • The bright frame lines shift when you focus the camera, to correct for any slight parallax error.
  • You can see objects slightly outside of the bright frame lines, allowing you to better anticipate when they might move into shot.
  • While looking through the viewfinder, press the viewfinder selector lever inwards, towards the lens. This activates a small electronic display in the OVF, which gives 100% magnification to aid focusing.

Electronic Viewfinder

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) previews what you’ll get when you shoot, from exposure and white balance to depth-of-field and focus.

  • When in manual focusing mode, pressing in the rear control dial (as if it were a button) magnifies a portion of the EVF, centered around the active focusing point to aid critical focusing.
  • When you don’t want the EVF to preview exposure and/or white balance (when shooting with studio flash, for example), this can be switched off in the SET UP > SCREEN SET-UP menu. Choose the PREVIEW EXP./WB IN MANUAL MODE option.

Shooting Video

Picking the Right Settings

The first thing to decide is which resolution and frame rate settings to use. You’ll find these options in the MOVIE SETTING > MOVIE MODE menu.

  • 4K 2160p resolutions offer the best quality on the X-Pro3.
  • Full HD 1080p resolutions are a good compromise between quality and storage size.
  • HD 720p resolutions take up less room on the camera’s SD card.
  • Frame rates of 24p, 25p or 29.97p are fine for most normal applications. 24p is sometimes favored by creative filmmakers for its Hollywood look and feel.
  • Footage captured at frame rates of 59.94p or 50p can capture motion more smoothly. Plus, when played back at normal speeds (30fps or 25fps) during editing, it delivers silky-smooth slow motion.
  • There is also a FULL HD HIGH SPEED REC mode within the MOVIE SETTING menu where you can select up to 5x slow motion. When this mode is activated, the regular movie mode will be unavailable.
  • Remember, if you want to show video settings on the hidden LCD screen, you can select that from SET UP > SCREEN SET-UP > SUB MONITOR.

Did you know 25p and 50p frame rates are best for European countries, while 29.97p and 59.94p are more suited to the USA?

Exposure Settings for Cinematic Video

Here’s a set of standard settings you can use in manual (M) shooting mode that will create great-looking, cinematic-style video.

  • Choose a frame rate – 24fps is a standard used in the movie industry and has a very top-end look and feel.
  • Select a shutter speed that is roughly double the frame rate you’re using, so each frame is exposed for 50% of the time. For example, if you’re shooting at 24fps, pick a shutter speed of 1/50 sec.
  • Select the aperture you need for the required depth-of-field.
  • Adjust the camera’s ISO sensitivity to get the proper exposure.

Continuous Focusing with Video

Switch to AF-C using the focus mode selector on the front of the camera and the X-Pro3 will adjust focusing as you film, tracking people around the frame if face detection is switched on. You can turn this on from the AF/MF SETTING > FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING menu (and you can also assign face detection to the Q Menu for faster access).

Connecting to Your Smart Device

Your X-Pro3 can communicate wirelessly with your smartphone or tablet computer via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so you can transfer pictures to your device, where they can be edited and shared with friends and followers online. You can also use your smart device to shoot remotely, controlling the camera, and even seeing what the camera sees with remote live view.

Linking to the Camera for the First Time

  • Install the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote app on your iOS or Android device.
