Pull-focus effects are commonplace on film sets. They can be used to huge creative effect to add a new dimension to your filmmaking projects. Here\u2019s how to achieve the effect with your FUJIFILM X Series camera.<\/p>\n

The practice of adjusting the point of focus while capturing video is often known as pulling focus or racking focus \u2013\u00a0names that come from the movie industry where the technique has been used to tremendous creative effect by big-name directors. Digital video has made pull focus much easier to do, and now you\u2019ll see it in everything from TV news reports to cutting-edge box-set dramas. And it\u2019s also easy to do with your X Series camera.<\/p>\n

Before we start talking about the ins and outs of focusing, we need to consider that a pull-focus effect is only going to work if we have shallow depth-of-field. This means opening up the aperture, which can be problematic if you still want to use a shutter speed that\u2019s half the duration of the frame rate. Set ISO as low as possible and look at using an ND filter if the scene still looks overexposed.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

With your exposure settings made, set the camera to Continuous AF and make sure the MOVIE AF MODE is set to AREA (you can find this option in your camera\u2019s MOVIE SETTING menu). This gives you control over the position of the AF point in the frame.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
