Although they thrive on such high pressure, for this shoot, they wanted to put the X-T30 to the test in an arguably more challenging environment: unplanned and on the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project was unique for us in that there really was no story. No plan. No script,\u201d says John. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to hit the road with no plan other than to document the \u2018what, who and where\u2019 of an unscripted road trip like this one. It was an exercise in the impromptu; an attempt to work outside our comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp_flexbox col2\">\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_3.jpg?width=581&#038;height=363\" alt=\"GRITMEDIA takes the FUJIFILM X-T30 on a road trip in Texas\" width=\"581\" height=\"363\"  data-recalc-dims=\"1\"><\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_4.jpg?width=581&#038;height=363\" alt=\"GRITMEDIA takes the FUJIFILM X-T30 on a road trip in Texas\" width=\"581\" height=\"363\"  data-recalc-dims=\"1\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>Kaleb and John chose the town of Childress and its surrounding area as the location for their shoot. \u201cChildress and its neighboring small towns \u2013 rural gems packed full of charm and character unknown to most non-Texans \u2013 proved to be a perfect backdrop,\u201d explains Kaleb, telling us they particularly enjoyed the authentic and unmistakable Texan personality present around every corner. \u201cIt is a unique mix of rural America; the warm, friendly people and wide-open spaces that only the Lonestar State can offer,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The guys teamed up with a friend of theirs who lives locally and acted as their personal tour guide. \u201cLike most native Texans, our friend Russell Graves takes great pride in his state and his town,\u201d Kaleb says with a smile. \u201cHe\u2019s always eager to play tour guide, and to share what he loves most about the people and places in his backyard. As visitors to these places, it was fun for us to ride shotgun, snap pics and convey a sense of place in an unfamiliar landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_5.jpg?width=2000&amp;height=1333\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_5.jpg?width=2000&amp;height=1333\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p><p>While shedding ties and letting the shots come to you is great, you have to be ready to capture them. For Kaleb and John, the X-T30 was the perfect tool. \u201cOne of the biggest challenges with shooting in new environments is being ready for the \u2018decisive moment\u2019, John explains. \u201cWhen an interesting photo op unfolds in front of you, you and your camera have one chance to get the shot. The X-T30 did just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He goes on to commend the camera\u2019s speed and ease of use: \u201cThere was no start-up lag, no missing focus, no issues whatsoever. It quickly became an intuitive extension of our eyes, helping us tell our story and document our road trip with ease.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_6.jpg?width=2000&amp;height=1016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_6.jpg?width=2000&amp;height=1016\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p><p>For this shoot, Kaleb and John split their photo and video responsibilities. John used the X-T30 to shoot stills, while Kaleb paired it up with the FUJINON MKX18-55mmT2.9 cinema lens to shoot video. \u201cThis \u2018divide and conquer\u2019 approach works well on our commercial shoots, and it proved equally effective in this case,\u201d says Kaleb, highlighting the camera\u2019s professional-level performance as a key factor. \u201cThe X-T30 was very responsive. Focus tracking, high ISO performance and other features we require in a camera did not disappoint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to such great features, the camera\u2019s portable body also made an impression. \u201cThe X-T30 is the ideal travel companion. Offering many of the same great features as the X-T3, it takes up virtually no space in our packs, and delivers performance worthy of more expensive bodies,\u201d he says. \u201cIn short, Fujifilm has packed a lot of tech into a very small camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GRITMEDIA takes the NEW Fujifilm X-T30 to Texas\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c7zilpHGeQI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>In fact, it is this aspect of FUJIFILM design that stood out to the guys at GRITMEDIA when they first moved across to X Series gear. \u201cAs relatively recent converts to FUJIFILM from the big and bulky world of DSLRs, we\u2019ve been blown away by just how compact, lightweight and packable our X Series kits are,\u201d says John.<\/p>\n<p>Kaleb adds that it has dramatically changed their workflow: \u201cWe often find ourselves in far-away places like Africa, Costa Rica, Argentina, or Australia where carrying massive amounts of heavy equipment just isn\u2019t an option, so X Series gear has proven to be the perfect setup for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_7.jpg?width=2000&amp;height=1179\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_7.jpg?width=2000&amp;height=1179\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p><p>This portability, durability and ease of use fits perfectly with Kaleb and John\u2019s committed approach to their work. When asked how to create imagery that can be enjoyed long into the future, they advise us to always go the extra mile: \u201cThink way beyond \u2018just taking pictures\u2019 \u2013 way beyond \u2018good enough\u2019. Strive to do something different, be unique and find your vision,\u201d Kaleb tells us.<\/p>\n<p>John agrees, explaining that in the end it comes down to hard work, dedication and preparation. \u201cDo your homework, roll up your sleeves and get to work. If possible, wait for great light, be there before the action unfolds, and be ready to capture it. If you have to sweat a little, stay out late or get up early, you\u2019re on the right track.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp_flexbox col2\">\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_8.jpg?width=581&#038;height=871\" alt=\"GRITMEDIA takes the FUJIFILM X-T30 on a road trip in Texas\" width=\"581\" height=\"871\"  data-recalc-dims=\"1\"><\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fujifilm-x.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/X-T30-On-The-Road_GRITMEDIA_Texas_9.jpg?width=581&#038;height=871\" alt=\"GRITMEDIA takes the FUJIFILM X-T30 on a road trip in Texas\" width=\"581\" height=\"871\"  data-recalc-dims=\"1\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>Throughout this shoot, and the rest of their work, the GRITMEDIA team holds authenticity above all else, saying that in such a visual world they feel a responsibility to photograph stories with unapologetic realism. \u201cIf that means we get dirt under our fingernails and our cameras and lenses take a beating, so be it. We\u2019ve never expected the world to beat a path to our doorsteps, but rather, we choose to get off the couch and get busy shooting authentic imagery that resonates with our clients,\u201d says Kaleb.<\/p>\n<p>John agrees, telling us that he believes this undying hunger for the best shot is what forms the foundation for building a legacy. That, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. \u201cIf we compromise our standards or if we don\u2019t evoke a visceral response with our work, we\u2019ve failed.
