\u00ab Je me souviens que, quand j\u2019\u00e9tais enfant, nous emportions un appareil photo argentique en vacances. Devant les photos d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es, on disait : \u00ab Celle-ci est r\u00e9ussie ; celle-ci est rat\u00e9e. \u00bb Mais je ne m\u2019\u00e9tais jamais interrog\u00e9 sur ce que cela signifiait \u00bb, se souvient Andy. \u00ab Qu\u2019est-ce que cela signifie lorsqu\u2019une photo est r\u00e9ussie ou non \u2013 et pourquoi ? Qu\u2019est-ce qui a caus\u00e9 le flou ou la surexposition ? \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00ab J\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 me pencher sur la question et j\u2019ai cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 comprendre pourquoi j\u2019aimais certaines photos alors que d\u2019autres \u00e9taient vraiment rat\u00e9es, et j\u2019ai rejoint les premi\u00e8res communaut\u00e9s de photographie en ligne. J\u2019ai progress\u00e9 et j\u2019ai vite \u00e9t\u00e9 rattrap\u00e9 par l\u2019obsession de prendre des photos de plus en plus belles, par exemple des expositions longues, l\u2019attente de l\u2019heure dor\u00e9e, etc. J\u2019ai tout appris tout seul, mais j\u2019ai trouv\u00e9 ma source d\u2019inspiration principale dehors dans la nature. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n Refl\u00e9tant cet amour du plein air, la photographie d’Andy cherche avant tout \u00e0 communiquer le ressenti d’un lieu plut\u00f4t que de cr\u00e9er une repr\u00e9sentation documentaire du paysage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00ab Ce n\u2019est pas vraiment l\u2019endroit que vous photographiez \u00bb, songe-t-il. \u00ab Vous cherchez \u00e0 photographier ce que cet endroit suscite en vous. C’est l’objectif ultime de toute photo, en particulier dans la photographie de paysage. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00ab Je ne suis pas pointilleux sur la perfection technique. Avant, je me souciais beaucoup de la perte de d\u00e9tails dans les hautes lumi\u00e8res par exemple, mais \u00e0 mesure que vous gagnez en confiance en photographie, vous apprenez \u00e0 accepter les imperfections \u00bb, sugg\u00e8re Andy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00ab Il m\u2019arrive ainsi de photographier une sc\u00e8ne o\u00f9 rien ne se passe dans le ciel. Dans beaucoup d\u2019endroits o\u00f9 je travaille, comme en Namibie, le ciel est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement tr\u00e8s vide. C’est si important que m\u00eame les personnes qui n’ont pas de compr\u00e9hension technique ou d’int\u00e9r\u00eat pour la photographie la remarqueront et pourront ressentir quelque chose en regardant la photo. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dans le monde de la photographie de paysage, la planification joue un r\u00f4le essentiel, explique Andy : \u00ab Je travaille avec un partenaire qui n\u2019accorde aucune valeur aux images spontan\u00e9es. Il passe un temps fou \u00e0 scruter les pr\u00e9visions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques et Google Earth et trouve sa satisfaction quand toutes les pi\u00e8ces s\u2019assemblent comme il l\u2019avait pr\u00e9vu. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n Si le travail d’Andy repose aussi sur une planification approfondie, il appr\u00e9cie de laisser de la place aux impr\u00e9vus dans sa photographie. \u00ab Il y a presque toujours un \u00e9l\u00e9ment inattendu. Vous savez que la lumi\u00e8re interagira d\u2019une certaine mani\u00e8re, mais il arrive qu\u2019une portion de la sc\u00e8ne se retrouve \u00e9clair\u00e9e de mani\u00e8re inattendue. Vous devez donc \u00eatre flexible et pr\u00eat \u00e0 vous adapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imaginons que, dans une image, vous ayez un premier plan \u00e0 environ 6 m\u00e8tres et votre sujet \u00e0 des kilom\u00e8tres. Entre votre premier plan et votre arri\u00e8re-plan, il peut se passer toutes sortes de choses. Votre premier plan peut se retrouver dans l\u2019ombre, alors qu\u2019une trou\u00e9e dans les nuages, ou un autre ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne impr\u00e9vu, \u00e9clairera votre arri\u00e8re-plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00ab\u00a0Dans ce cas, vous pouvez retirer votre objectif grand-angle et utiliser par exemple le FUJINON XF70-300mmF4-5.6\u00a0R\u00a0LM\u00a0OIS WR<\/a>. Vous \u00e9liminez alors le premier plan, zoomez dans le paysage lointain et composez votre image diff\u00e9remment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Si je consid\u00e8re mon portfolio, beaucoup d\u2019images sont planifi\u00e9es : nous attendons la lumi\u00e8re recherch\u00e9e et prenons la photo. Mais m\u00eame dans ce cas, il faut souvent trouver un premier plan particulier qui fonctionne avec l\u2019arri\u00e8re-plan que nous avions rep\u00e9r\u00e9, ou la lumi\u00e8re se comporte de mani\u00e8re inattendue. Vous vous dites alors simplement que cela va marcher. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dans une discipline qui peut combiner photographie et longues journ\u00e9es de randonn\u00e9e, Andy doit arbitrer entre la portabilit\u00e9 et la pure qualit\u00e9 optique lors du choix de son \u00e9quipement. \u00ab\u00a0Les appareils photo et les objectifs sont tellement meilleurs qu\u2019\u00e0 mes d\u00e9buts, il y a 15\u00a0\u00e0\u00a020\u00a0ans\u00a0\u00bb, souligne-t-il. \u00ab\u00a0Nous avons beaucoup de chance. En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, plut\u00f4t que d\u2019emporter les focales fixes les plus performantes et les plus nettes et des zooms f\/2.8, j\u2019opte pour la l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00ab\u00a0J\u2019emporte toujours un zoom grand-angle, comme le FUJINON XF10-24mmF4\u00a0R\u00a0OIS\u00a0WR<\/a> et aussi un zoom t\u00e9l\u00e9objectif, comme le XF70-300mmF4-5.6\u00a0R\u00a0LM\u00a0OIS\u00a0WR. Ce sont des objectifs incroyables avec des ouvertures fixes \u00e0 f\/2,8, mais plus lourds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n La plupart des gens ne verront jamais ce pourcentage suppl\u00e9mentaire de nettet\u00e9 dans mon travail. Je le remarquerai peut-\u00eatre si je zoome \u00e0 100 %, mais pour les tirages que je vends ou mes images destin\u00e9es \u00e0 des campagnes en ligne, on ne voit pas la diff\u00e9rence. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n Il est certes important d\u2019emporter l\u2019\u00e9quipement adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la mission, mais aux yeux d\u2019Andy, ce n\u2019est pas la priorit\u00e9 pour les photographes paysagistes d\u00e9butants, loin s\u2019en faut. \u00ab Ne vous focalisez pas sur l\u2019\u00e9quipement \u00bb, note-t-il. \u00ab Ce sur quoi vous devez vous concentrer, c\u2019est vous am\u00e9liorer en tant que photographe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Le golfeur Gary Player a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \u00ab Plus je m\u2019entra\u00eene, plus j\u2019ai de chance. \u00bb Plus vous irez dehors, plus vous vous trouverez dans des endroits offrant des opportunit\u00e9s de photos r\u00e9ussies. Vous n\u2019avez pas besoin d\u2019aller loin \u00bb, ajoute Andy. \u00ab Une grande partie de mon apprentissage s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e \u00e0 moins de 45 minutes de chez moi, en photographiant le littoral pr\u00e8s de Lisbonne. La plupart des gens vivent \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 d\u2019un espace naturel accessible en voiture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ce qui est important, c\u2019est de sortir \u00e0 des heures qui ne sont pas n\u00e9cessairement confortables. R\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 votre travail est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment crucial du processus, sugg\u00e8re Andy. \u00ab Vous devez \u00e9galement faire preuve d\u2019esprit critique au niveau de la composition. Avec les appareils photo actuels, il est relativement facile d’obtenir une bonne exposition et une bonne mise au point. Reste la composition, qui est une chose ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nalement complexe \u00e0 comprendre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n C\u2019est la chose la plus difficile \u00e0 enseigner. C\u2019est comme essayer d\u2019enseigner \u00e0 quelqu\u2019un pourquoi une certaine disposition de notes musicales fait une belle m\u00e9lodie, alors que si vous les r\u00e9arrangez, cela sonne faux. The process was an exploration of tension that blended Velvia\u2019s vibrancy with a softer, more subtle mood to create images that feel beautiful and impactful. The result is a genuinely personal take on color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dominic admits that he used to despise the beach, associating it with hot sand and long family car rides. But that changed when a 1940s-era beach cottage joined his family, providing a foundation for a relationship with the ocean. It was there that his love for surfing began. \u201cOnce I stood on a surfboard for the first time, I never looked back,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet, it wasn\u2019t until he was 26 years old that a camera found its way into his hands. With a bit of money saved and a few weeks to spare before starting a master\u2019s program, he walked into a camera store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dominic began documenting surf photography, and a chance encounter at a local longboard contest led to a sponsorship for a waterproof housing. Suddenly, he was in the water, creating the perspectives he had grown up romanticizing in magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI remember the first session I swam out with my camera; I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever forget it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dominic\u2019s creative style has an appreciation for color, so he was excited to build a FS RECIPE from Velvia\u2019s base with X-E5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While he was confident that it would work perfectly for landscapes, he was curious to see how it would render the blues of the ocean. His goal was to balance the Film Simulation\u2019s intensity with a gentle touch, letting its personality shine through without creating an \u2018overcooked\u2019 image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He describes his FS RECIPE choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTo bring a bit of softness to an image that I expected to have stronger contrast than I\u2019m used to, I knew I wanted to reduce the CLARITY in my FS RECIPE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI lifted the blacks just a touch to really lean into that softness, sort of working in tension with Velvia\u2019s character.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, he reduced the overall saturation slightly while adding a strong COLOR CHROME EFFECT for the blues. The aim was to create a FS RECIPE that was \u2018subtle yet steadfast in its impact\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dominic views his finished photos as a kind of Trojan horse, \u2018being pretty and easy on the eyes at first, but unleashing something with a bit more impact once we\u2019ve softened enough to receive it\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Creating a finished look in-camera was an engaging and freeing experience for Dominic. \u201cAs soon as I decided on my FS RECIPE, I made sure my camera was only making a single image at a time,\u201d he notes, compared to his usual burst mode preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The entire process, the feel of the camera, the view through the EVF, and his custom FS RECIPE encouraged him to slow down and be intentional with his composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This approach stands in contrast to his typical workflow of creating with RAW files and pulling details from the shadows in post-production. Dominic found the process of creating a straight-out-of-camera image he was happy with \u2018really liberating\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI love editing, but it was nice just to transfer a photo to my phone wirelessly and have it ready to go,\u201d he says. It\u2019s a method Dominic sees lending itself to photojournalism, travel, and even providing real-time turnaround at competitions using X-E5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What keeps Dominic inspired is a perspective that life and art are a \u2018conversation with the unseen and unknowable\u2019. For him, every moment is an expression of something flowing through us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dominic\u2019s goal is not just to make a picture, but \u2018to create imagery which will somehow translate the ineffable and transcend our concepts of self, to strike us deeply at our core\u2019. When Fujifilm brought it into the digital age, I was hooked all over again. The colors still had that punch, the contrast still had that drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Velvia is a strong character. Left untamed, it can run away with your highlights, sink your shadows, and push colors a little too far. I wanted to keep its soul but give it a touch of restraint, something I could trust in any light, from the quiet countryside to the vibrant streets of the Philippines. That is how \u201cKanto Khromatiks\u201d came to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The name comes from two words: kanto<\/em>, the Filipino word for \u201cstreet corner,\u201d and Khromatics<\/em>, meaning \u201ccolors.\u201d Together, it means \u201cstreet corner colors,\u201d a nod to the life, movement, and vibrance you find in everyday scenes, whether it is a busy market, a quiet alley, or the glow of streetlights at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I keep the Film Simulation on Velvia with DYNAMIC RANGE on AUTO. Highlights are pulled GRAIN EFFECT is WEAK and SMALL, just enough to whisper back to my film days without getting in the way. COLOR CHROME EFFECT and COLOR CHROME FX BLUE are both on WEAK, keeping the colors full but not heavy-handed. WHITE BALANCE stays on AUTO, as Fujifilm gets it right more often than not, whether I am in midday sun, shade, or under warm caf\u00e9 lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Out in the field, this setup keeps Velvia\u2019s drama but reins it in just enough. Midday shots hold detail in the highlights. Golden hour turns the skies deep and painterly while the greens stay rich. At night, high ISO paired with that subtle grain gives me clean, cinematic frames without harsh noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The result is still Velvia: bold, colorful, alive, but with a balance that makes it work anywhere.
