Blijven proberen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Naar eigen zeggen waren Andy\u2019s eerste pogingen tot landschapsfotografie niet bijzonder goed. Maar in plaats van ontmoedigd te raken, raakte hij gefascineerd door uit te zoeken wat sommige foto\u2019s beter maakte dan andere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIk herinner me dat we als kind een fotocamera meenamen op vakantie. Als je de foto\u2019s liet ontwikkelen, was er die uitdrukking: \u2018Deze is goed gelukt, deze is niet gelukt.\u2019 Maar ik vroeg me nooit af wat dat betekende\u201d, herinnert Andy zich. \u201cWat betekent het als een foto lukt of niet lukt – en waarom zou dat zijn? Wat zorgde ervoor dat hij onscherp was of dat hij overbelicht was?<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIk begon ernaar te kijken en te proberen uit te zoeken waarom ik sommige foto\u2019s leuk vond, terwijl andere vreselijk waren, dus ik sloot me aan bij een aantal vroege online fotogemeenschappen. Daar leerde ik en raakte al snel geobsedeerd door het maken van steeds betere foto\u2019s – lange belichtingen, wachten op het gouden uur, dat soort dingen. Ik heb het mezelf gewoon geleerd, maar het kwam allemaal vooral voort uit een liefde voor buiten zijn in de natuur.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Deze liefde voor het buitenleven betekent dat de kern van Andy\u2019s fotografie draait om het overbrengen van een gevoel voor een plek, in plaats van het cre\u00ebren van een documentaireweergave van het landschap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cJe fotografeert de plek niet echt\u201d, mijmert hij. \u201cJe probeert te fotograferen hoe de plek je doet voelen. Dat is het ultieme doel van elke foto, vooral in landschapsfotografie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIk ben geen pietje-precies als het op technische perfectie aankomt. \u201cVroeger maakte ik me veel zorgen over overbelichting en dat soort dingen, maar naarmate je meer zelfvertrouwen krijgt in je fotografie, leer je imperfecties te omarmen\u201d, aldus Andy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBijvoorbeeld wanneer ik een sc\u00e8ne fotografeer waarin er niets in de lucht gebeurt. Op veel plaatsen waar ik werk, zoals Namibi\u00eb, is de lucht meestal erg leeg. Dat betekent dat het in principe geen interessant element in de foto is\u201d, merkt hij op. \u201cWat je daar kunt doen, is de lucht laten uitbijten, om die in plaats daarvan wit en wazig te maken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hoewel je technische aspecten kunt bijsturen en ermee kunt spelen, gelooft Andy dat je niet kunt inboeten op een sterke compositie. \u201cDe compositie moet harmonieus aanvoelen\u201d, stelt hij. \u201cEr zijn allerlei regels voor compositie, maar waar ze aan het einde van de dag op neerkomen, is iets cre\u00ebren met visueel evenwicht. Er moet harmonie zijn in de manier waarop de verschillende elementen bij elkaar passen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Iets cruciaals voor een geweldige foto, maar moeilijker te defini\u00ebren, is de sfeer. \u201cWat het verschil maakt tussen een goede foto en een uitstekende foto is de sfeer\u201d, vervolgt Andy. \u201cDaarvoor heb je de juiste omstandigheden nodig, wat betekent dat er een element van geluk bij komt kijken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNaarmate ik ben gegroeid, heb ik manieren geleerd om met slecht weer en vlak licht om te gaan om sfeer te vinden of te cre\u00ebren, ofwel door onder te belichten of door nabewerking om hogere contrastniveaus te introduceren. Sfeer is iets wat je nodig hebt om een foto te verbeteren. Het is zo belangrijk dat zelfs mensen die geen technisch inzicht of interesse in fotografie hebben, het zullen opmerken en iets bij de foto zullen voelen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In de wereld van landschapsfotografie helpt planning enorm, legt Andy uit: \u201cIk heb een partner met wie ik werk die geen enkel spontaan beeld waardeert. Hij besteedt zoveel tijd aan het bekijken van weersvoorspellingen en Google Earth dat zijn tevredenheid voortkomt uit het zien dat alle stukken samenkomen zoals hij voorspelde.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Terwijl Andy\u2019s werk ook draait om uitgebreide planning, laat hij in zijn fotografie veel liever ruimte voor het onvoorziene. \u201cEr is vaak een element dat je niet verwacht te zien. Je weet dat het licht op een bepaalde manier zal interageren, maar sommige omstandigheden kunnen een bepaald deel van de sc\u00e8ne verlichten dat je niet had verwacht, dus je moet flexibel zijn en klaar om je aan te passen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNormaal gesproken heb je in een foto een voorgrond binnen 6 meter van je, terwijl je onderwerp kilometers verderop kan liggen. Tussen je voor- en achtergrond kunnen er allerlei dingen gebeuren. Er is misschien helemaal geen licht op je voorgrond, terwijl de achtergrond zeer goed verlicht is vanwege een gat in de wolken of iets wat je niet had kunnen voorzien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn dat geval kun je je groothoeklens verwijderen en zoiets als de FUJINON XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR<\/a> gebruiken om de voorgrond weg te laten, in te zoomen op het verre landschap en op een andere manier te beginnen componeren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAls ik aan mijn portfolio denk, zijn er veel beelden gepland. We gaan en wachten op het beoogde licht en maken vervolgens de foto. Maar zelfs daarbinnen is er vaak nog de uitdaging om een \u200b\u200bspecifieke voorgrond te vinden die past bij de achtergrond die we al hebben verkend, of gedraagt \u200b\u200bhet licht zich onverwacht. Je denkt gewoon: ok\u00e9, dit zal werken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In een discipline die fotografie combineert met lange wandeldagen, moet Andy bij de keuze van zijn apparatuur een afweging maken tussen draagbaarheid en pure optische kwaliteit. \u201cCamera\u2019s en lenzen zijn zo goed in vergelijking met toen ik 15 tot 20\u00a0jaar geleden begon\u201d, merkt hij op. \u201cWe zijn ongelooflijk gezegend. Over het algemeen zijn lenzen van de hoogste kwaliteit zwaarder, dus als ik echt wil uitpakken met hoogwaardige lenzen, gebruik ik het GFX-systeem<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAls ik echter draagbaarheid wil, grijp ik naar de FUJIFILM\u00a0X-T5<\/a>. En de goedkopere lenzen van Fujifilm, die niet helemaal top-of-the-line zijn, zijn uitstekend voor mijn behoeften. Meestal neem ik niet de beste, scherpste prime-lenzen en F2.8-zoomlenzen mee, maar juist de lichtgewicht modellen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEr zit altijd een groothoekzoom in, iets zoals de FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR<\/a>, en ik breng een telezoom mee, zoals de XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR. Dan heb ik in het midden een standaardzoom. De lens die ik gebruik is de FUJINON XF16-50mmF2.8-4.8 R LM WR<\/a>. Het is een uitstekende lens en weegt slechts 240\u00a0g. Naast zoiets als de XF70-300mmF4-5.6, die 580\u00a0g weegt, heb je een lichtgewicht opstelling met een geweldige dekking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIk ben niet geobsedeerd door het gebruik van de absoluut scherpste lenzen. Als dat wel het geval was, zou ik dingen gebruiken zoals de FUJINON XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR<\/a>, XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR II<\/a> en XF8-16mmF2.8 R LM WR<\/a>. Dat zijn ongelooflijke lenzen met een vast F2.8-diafragma, maar zwaarder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDe meeste mensen zullen dat extra percentage scherpte in mijn werk nooit zien. Ik merk het misschien als ik inzoom op 100%, maar voor de afdrukken die ik verkoop of de foto\u2019s die ik maak voor online campagnes, zul je het verschil niet zien.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hoewel het belangrijk is om de juiste apparatuur voor de opdracht mee te nemen, merkt Andy op dat dit verre van het eerste is waar beginnende landschapsfotografen aan moeten denken. \u201cBlijf er niet in hangen\u201d, merkt hij op. \u201cWaar je je meer op moet richten is jezelf verbeteren als fotograaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDe golfer Gary Player zei: \u2018Hoe harder ik oefen, hoe meer geluk ik heb.\u2019 Hoe meer je eropuit trekt, hoe vaker je op plekken komt waar je de kans hebt om goede foto\u2019s te maken. \u201cJe hoeft niet ver te gaan\u201d, voegt Andy toe. \u201cEen groot deel van wat ik mezelf heb aangeleerd, kwam voort uit het fotograferen van de kustlijn bij Lissabon, binnen 45 minuten van mijn woonplaats.\u201d De meeste mensen wonen op rijafstand van een bepaalde vorm van natuur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWat belangrijk is, is eropuit trekken op uren die niet per se comfortabel zijn. Opstaan in de kou voor de zonsopgang is niet fijn. Buiten zijn voor de zonsondergang kan betekenen dat je heel laat dineert. Maar het is de moeite waard om die oncomfortabele zone te betreden.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Er is echter meer nodig dan alleen foto\u2019s maken om te verbeteren. Nadenken over je werk is een cruciaal onderdeel van het proces, stelt Andy. \u201cJe moet ook kritisch zijn over wat compositieel werkt. Met camera\u2019s van tegenwoordig is het relatief eenvoudig om belichting en scherpstelling goed te krijgen. Dat laat compositie over, wat een fenomenaal complex iets is om te begrijpen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHet is het moeilijkste om te onderwijzen. Het is net alsof je iemand probeert te leren waarom een bepaalde schikking van muzieknoten een mooie melodie oplevert, maar als je die noten verwisselt, klinkt het verkeerd. Het is iets wat we bijna onbewust voelen. Waarom zijn bepaalde vormen aantrekkelijk? Waarom is een eenzame boom aantrekkelijker dan vijf bomen? Suddenly, he was in the water, creating the perspectives he had grown up romanticizing in magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI remember the first session I swam out with my camera; I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever forget it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dominic\u2019s creative style has an appreciation for color, so he was excited to build a FS RECIPE from Velvia\u2019s base with X-E5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While he was confident that it would work perfectly for landscapes, he was curious to see how it would render the blues of the ocean. The aim was to create a FS RECIPE that was \u2018subtle yet steadfast in its impact\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dominic views his finished photos as a kind of Trojan horse, \u2018being pretty and easy on the eyes at first, but unleashing something with a bit more impact once we\u2019ve softened enough to receive it\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Creating a finished look in-camera was an engaging and freeing experience for Dominic. \u201cAs soon as I decided on my FS RECIPE, I made sure my camera was only making a single image at a time,\u201d he notes, compared to his usual burst mode preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The entire process, the feel of the camera, the view through the EVF, and his custom FS RECIPE encouraged him to slow down and be intentional with his composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This approach stands in contrast to his typical workflow of creating with RAW files and pulling details from the shadows in post-production. Dominic found the process of creating a straight-out-of-camera image he was happy with \u2018really liberating\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI love editing, but it was nice just to transfer a photo to my phone wirelessly and have it ready to go,\u201d he says. It\u2019s a method Dominic sees lending itself to photojournalism, travel, and even providing real-time turnaround at competitions using X-E5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What keeps Dominic inspired is a perspective that life and art are a \u2018conversation with the unseen and unknowable\u2019. For him, every moment is an expression of something flowing through us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dominic\u2019s goal is not just to make a picture, but \u2018to create imagery which will somehow translate the ineffable and transcend our concepts of self, to strike us deeply at our core\u2019. Highlights are pulled GRAIN EFFECT is WEAK and SMALL, just enough to whisper back to my film days without getting in the way. COLOR CHROME EFFECT and COLOR CHROME FX BLUE are both on WEAK, keeping the colors full but not heavy-handed. WHITE BALANCE stays on AUTO, as Fujifilm gets it right more often than not, whether I am in midday sun, shade, or under warm caf\u00e9 lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Out in the field, this setup keeps Velvia\u2019s drama but reins it in just enough. Midday shots hold detail in the highlights. Golden hour turns the skies deep and painterly while the greens stay rich. At night, high ISO paired with that subtle grain gives me clean, cinematic frames without harsh noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The result is still Velvia: bold, colorful, alive, but with a balance that makes it work anywhere.
