It started in the film days, the process of carefully loading rolls into cameras, counting frames, and trusting my instincts with every click. There was no instant validation, only patience. The reward came later, when I finally held printed photographs in my hands, admiring images filled with grain, texture, and quiet imperfections that carried an unmistakable sense of nostalgia. Fujifilm’s color science and Film Simulations opened up an entirely new creative world for me, one that resonated deeply with my film roots. Std.

In my portrait and fashion portrait work, I have always aimed to move away from strict realism, favoring instead a more emotional, suspended, almost cinematic image. This FS RECIPE is an attempt to make that atmosphere consistent and intentional, directly in-camera.

The starting point was the way I use light in the studio. I often work with controlled lighting, both flash and continuous, seeking a balance between softness and structure. I am not interested in an overly sharp or clinical rendering of the skin, but in images that suggest more than they reveal. For this reason, I developed a simulation with slightly denatured tones and a delicate yet intentional color palette, capable of reducing saturation without flattening the image. The colors become quieter, allowing emotion and presence to take precedence.

SHADOW play a central role in “Velvet Hase”. Leo and Nesto are two close friends immersed in the everyday rituals of childhood, videogames, drones, and casual mischief, until they wake one morning to discover that all adults have vanished. What initially feels like complete freedom slowly reveals deeper implications. Without authority or imposed rules, imagination flourishes, but responsibility begins to surface.

Visually, the film avoids over stylization. Rao’s intention was clear: “From the very beginning, my intention was for the camera to quietly serve the story rather than call attention to itself. This balance between intimacy and distance becomes central to how the story is experienced, keeping the audience aligned with the characters’ evolving sense of freedom and unease.

Medium format, lenses, and spatial rhythm

The choice to shoot with FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55, combined with the Premista lenses, shaped not only the film’s aesthetic but also its internal rhythm. The medium-format sensor allowed Fiore to hold more spatial information within each frame, reinforcing a sense of depth and dimensionality while maintaining emotional closeness to the characters.

Mauro Fiore’s long experience with Fujinon Premista lenses, particularly Fujinon Premista 28-100mT2.9, played a decisive role in translating this potential into practice. “I have quite a bit of experience with Premista lenses, and I’m especially familiar with the 28–100mm. It performs amazingly well,” he notes.

For Fabio, the camera’s huge sensor is what truly unlocked that optical potential. “The format itself amplifies that vision,” he explains. “The expansiveness of the sensor allows us to capture more in every frame, giving the film a distinctive look and a narrative rhythm.”

This combination of large-format sensor and lenses proved especially valuable when working in confined spaces. Medium and even wide shots could be captured from very short distances, sometimes as close as one meter, without sacrificing spatial coherence. The result is a visual language that feels open and immersive yet never detached from the characters at its center.

Lighting the path home

Although Dove Sono Mamma e Papà? is not autobiographical, its connection to place carries particular resonance for Mauro Fiore. Long based in the United States, Calabria remains his homeland and returning to shoot there added an understated but meaningful layer to the project.

The film was shot entirely in real locations across the region during the height of summer, in towns and spaces that remained active and crowded throughout production. Rather than reshaping locations to fit the film, the crew adapted their methods to each place day by day. Calabria’s natural light, often harsh and vertical at midday, then softer and more sculptural in the late afternoon, became an expressive element rather than a constraint.

Supported by a fully local crew, Fiore’s visual approach drew on both technical precision and familiarity with the environment. The region’s landscapes, light, and rhythms quietly inform the film’s tone, grounding its more surreal elements in a tangible sense of place. In this way, Calabria becomes more than a setting: it is an unspoken presence within the film’s visual identity.

A camera in the service of narrative

From a production standpoint, Fujifilm GFX ETERNA 55 proved itself as a Film-making camera designed for professional, narrative-driven workflows. Its robust cinema-style construction, industry-standard connections, adaptable native lens mount, and visually stepless internal electronic variable ND filter offered flexibility across a wide range of shooting conditions.

The F-Log2 C profile provided substantial latitude for color grading, while Fujifilm’s Film Simulations and new Film Simulation 3D LUTs, each inspired by analog film stocks, expanded creative options without imposing a predetermined aesthetic. The camera’s design encouraged choice rather than prescription.

Rao also explored GFX ETERNA 55 independently in a documentary context, pairing it with a rehoused Fujinon EBC 28mm lens and using ACROS Film Simulation, an experience he describes as intuitive and expressive.

For Mauro Fiore, the camera also aligns with a broader creative philosophy: “Every film needs its own way of being told. Every film needs its own story. Whether it’s oil paints, tempera, or pastels, it’s always a matter of what is right for that narrative. I feel the same way about cameras.” Within this framework, the GFX ETERNA 55 is not positioned as a universal solution, but as a tool whose value emerges through its relationship with story, place, and creative intent.

Taken together, Dove Sono Mamma e Papà? offers a considered example of how medium-format cinematography, guided by an experienced visual author, can support intimate storytelling, balancing scale and proximity while remaining firmly anchored to narrative purpose.

Dove Sono Mamma e Papà? I’ve been photographing weddings, portraits, and events for nearly 20 years. I was born in Hong Kong and am now based in Auckland, New Zealand. Whenever I have spare time, I enjoy walking the streets with my camera, capturing the stories unfolding around me.

For many people, specifications and numbers determine which lens they choose. But for me, selecting a lens has never been just about the specs. Over the years, I’ve realized the specs only tell you part of the story.

Every lens carries its own point of view. It determines what you include in the frame, what you leave out, and how a moment is remembered. In many ways, it defines your relationship with photography itself.

When I first started, I was often told to upgrade from entry-level lenses as quickly as possible. If I wanted to create meaningful work, I needed better glass. Something more serious, more professional. At the time, I believed that. But both technology and my photography have changed dramatically since then.

Today, many entry-level lenses are remarkably capable. More importantly, I’ve learned that creativity doesn’t come from expensive equipment. It comes from your heart, your eyes, and your curiosity to explore the world.

I’ve been using the FUJINON XC13-33mmF3.5-6.3 OIS Lens(XC13-33mm) for some time now, and the more I work with it, the more I appreciate what it offers. Not just in performance, but in freedom.

Mounted on a compact body like the FUJIFILM X-T30 III, the setup is lightweight and discreet. But it covers almost all the focal lengths I use daily, especially for street photography — roughly 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm equivalents.

What I appreciate most is the 13mm wide end. I enjoy working with slower shutter speeds to capture motion. To express the energy and rhythm of a place. Having that capability in a compact zoom lens is a significant advantage in a camera I can carry with me every day.

Travel has always been an important part of my life. I love discovering new places and revisiting familiar ones. Wherever I go, a camera is always with me.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in life is that more doesn’t always mean better. Very often, less truly is more. In many ways, “good enough” has become one of the most important words in my life and in my photography.

There was a time when I felt the need to bring everything whenever I travelled. I was afraid that if I left something behind, I might miss an opportunity or fail to capture the best possible image.

But then I realized that carrying more equipment didn’t improve my images. Instead, I found myself constantly thinking about which lens to use, rather than paying attention to the world unfolding in front of me. A heavy bag also drained my energy and limited how far I was willing to explore.

Now, I choose simplicity.

With the XC13–33mm, I have a small, uncomplicated setup, and it’s good enough.

It has helped me grow as a photographer.
