Luke Davis \u00e4r en rese- och livsstilsfotograf fr\u00e5n Dorset i sydv\u00e4stra England. Sist vi pratade med Luke<\/a> beskrev han sin bildstil som en str\u00e4van efter att skapa en tidl\u00f6s k\u00e4nsla av nostalgi. \u201dJag f\u00f6rs\u00f6ker inte strikt efterlikna film, men jag f\u00f6rs\u00f6ker utnyttja n\u00e5gra av dess egenskaper\u201d, s\u00e4ger han nu. \u201dMjukheten, de kornliknande texturerna, och \u00e4ven en varm f\u00e4rgpalett.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dJag skulle s\u00e4ga att min stil har lutat mer \u00e5t det f\u00e4rgstarka och livfulla h\u00e5llet \u2013 jag har definitivt omfamnat en mer levande look i mina bilder under det senaste \u00e5ret eller s\u00e5\u201d, s\u00e4ger han. \u201dMen grundtanken att jag vill att mina bilder ska k\u00e4nnas mer som ett minne \u00e4r fortfarande k\u00e4rnan i min stil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dOrdet \u2019eskapism\u2019 \u00e4r det perfekta s\u00e4ttet att s\u00e4ga det. Det finns m\u00e5nga fotografer som g\u00f6r resefoton i dokument\u00e4r stil riktigt bra. F\u00f6r mig \u00e4r det fr\u00e4msta m\u00e5let att uppm\u00e4rksamma de mindre detaljerna, att ge en k\u00e4nsla av lugn och skapa en romantiserad version av livet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ett brett spektrum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vissa resefotografer bes\u00f6ker en plats f\u00f6r att uppfylla ett visst uppdrag. Lukes tillv\u00e4gag\u00e5ngss\u00e4tt \u00e4r mycket mer \u00f6ppet. \u201dJag har ingen medveten avsikt\u201d, s\u00e4ger han. \u201dJag reser inte till en plats f\u00f6r att ber\u00e4tta en viss historia. Ofta handlar det bara om att jag tar in det f\u00f6r f\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen och ser vad jag kan se \u2013 det \u00e4r hela id\u00e9n.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dMitt enda verkliga m\u00e5l \u00e4r att titta p\u00e5 en plats uppifr\u00e5n och ner s\u00e5 mycket jag kan. Jag f\u00f6rs\u00f6ker undvika att fokusera p\u00e5 den stora hj\u00e4ltebilden. Jag fokuserar inte heller bara p\u00e5 sm\u00e5 detaljer. Jag vill ha ett brett urval av foton \u2013 jag f\u00f6rs\u00f6ker alltid t\u00e4nka p\u00e5 det som att jag skapar en fotobok om den h\u00e4r platsen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En bra resefotograf vet hur man anv\u00e4nder den begr\u00e4nsade tiden p\u00e5 en plats p\u00e5 ett effektivt s\u00e4tt. \u201dDet hj\u00e4lper att ha en resplan i stora drag\u201d, s\u00e4ger Luke. \u201dJag f\u00f6rs\u00f6ker balansera mellan att ha n\u00e5gra omr\u00e5den jag vill utforska och sedan ge mig sj\u00e4lv frihet mellan de stunderna. R\u00e4tt utrustning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Luke har hittat det perfekta kreativa samarbetet f\u00f6r sin stil f\u00f6r resefotografering \u2013 Fujifilms X-serien. \u201dJag vill ha bilder med j\u00e4tteh\u00f6g uppl\u00f6sning, men jag vill ocks\u00e5 ha den d\u00e4r mjukare, analoga aspekten \u2013 en blandning av de tv\u00e5 v\u00e4rldarna. Nuf\u00f6rtiden \u00e4r min utrustning mycket mer minimalistisk. Jag tar med mig tv\u00e5, kanske tre objektiv. Det hade varit sex eller sju f\u00f6r n\u00e5gra \u00e5r sedan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dDen begr\u00e4nsningen skapar kreativitet \u2013 den tvingar dig att n\u00e4rma dig saker p\u00e5 ett s\u00e4tt du inte skulle ha gjort om du hade varje m\u00f6jlig br\u00e4nnvidd till ditt f\u00f6rfogande.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objektiv i X-serien f\u00f6r resefotografering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201dJag har alltid f\u00f6redragit standardobjektiv \u2013 n\u00e5got som ungef\u00e4r motsvarar 50 mm\u201d, s\u00e4ger Luke. \u201dJag har inte alltid ett vidvinkelobjektiv i v\u00e4skan, men n\u00e4r jag har det \u00e4lskar jag 18 mm-perspektivet. \u201dJag imponeras alltid av hur skarpa de d\u00e4r objektiven \u00e4r vid\u00f6ppna. Om man vill kan man bara l\u00e4mna dem p\u00e5 F1,4 och gl\u00f6mma bort det. Det finns uppenbara f\u00f6rdelar med den stora bl\u00e4ndar\u00f6ppningen \u2013 bra prestanda i svagt ljus och att uppn\u00e5 ett kort sk\u00e4rpedjup. Jag har tidigare anv\u00e4nt objektiv som kr\u00e4ver att man bl\u00e4ndar ner f\u00f6r att f\u00e5 optimala resultat. Att slippa den begr\u00e4nsningen \u00e4r en stor l\u00e4ttnad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dDen st\u00f6rsta f\u00f6rdelen \u00e4r att man kan arbeta med vid\u00f6ppen bl\u00e4ndare utan att beh\u00f6va oroa sig f\u00f6r att det p\u00e5verkar bildkvaliteten negativt. Och \u00e4ven om de \u00e4r lite st\u00f6rre \u00e4r de fortfarande ganska kompakta. I slut\u00e4ndan \u00e4r det fortfarande ett APS-C-objektiv \u2013 n\u00e4r jag tar av motljusskyddet fr\u00e5n ett av dem \u00e4r de ungef\u00e4r lika stort som en l\u00e4skburk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F\u00f6r ett \u00e4nnu kompaktare fast objektiv finns det m\u00e5nga v\u00e4ldigt b\u00e4rbara alternativ i sortimentet med objektiv i X-serien. \u201dOch vi har s\u00e5 klart de fasta F2-objektiven, som \u00e4r \u00e4nnu mindre\u201d, s\u00e4ger Luke. \u201dDe kan vara ett s\u00e4rskilt diskret resealternativ. Det ger lite andrum och ger mig lite utrymme att jobba med. Och det har en platt, n\u00e4stan m\u00e5lerisk kompression som jag \u00e4lskar i mina bilder. Jag skulle s\u00e4ga att jag g\u00f6r minst h\u00e4lften av mitt arbete med den br\u00e4nnvidden.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F\u00f6r den ultimata flexibiliteten f\u00f6resl\u00e5r Luke ett zoomobjektiv med fast bl\u00e4ndare som FUJINON XF16-80mmF4 R OIS WR<\/a>. Han kom nyligen tillbaka fr\u00e5n en resa till Japan, d\u00e4r han till stor del f\u00f6rlitade sig p\u00e5 en standardzoom f\u00f6r att kunna reagera snabbt p\u00e5 omgivningarna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dJag tror att det kom fr\u00e5n tanken p\u00e5 m\u00e5ngsidighet\u201d, s\u00e4ger han. \u201dAllt mitt arbete kr\u00e4ver inte en v\u00e4ldigt stor bl\u00e4ndare, s\u00e5 i det fallet \u2013 s\u00e4rskilt eftersom Japan \u00e4r en s\u00e5dan m\u00e5ste-destination f\u00f6r mig \u2013 ville jag inte missa n\u00e5gonting. Att ha hela det omf\u00e5nget var perfekt. Jag hade fortfarande ett standardobjektiv med fast br\u00e4nnvidd med mig, ifall att jag skulle vilja ha det grunda sk\u00e4rpedjupet eller befann mig i svagare ljus. Portfoliobilder som v\u00e4cker genklang<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lukes entusiasm f\u00f6r fotografering tillsammans med hans utforskning av en ny plats slutar ofta med att han tar ett stort antal foton under en resa. \u201dJag har faktiskt b\u00f6rjat s\u00e5lla efter hand\u201d, s\u00e4ger han. \u201dDet brukade jag aldrig g\u00f6ra \u2013 jag bara fotade som en galning och kom sedan hem med 6 000 foton att g\u00e5 igenom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dNuf\u00f6rtiden g\u00e5r jag igenom uppspelningsmenyn p\u00e5 baksidan av kameran i slutet av varje dag. Trycker man p\u00e5 AEL-knappen (exponeringsl\u00e5set) visas stj\u00e4rnbetyget. Sedan g\u00e5r jag igenom och markerar allt jag vill beh\u00e5lla med en stj\u00e4rna. Det sparar massor av tid n\u00e4r jag kommer hem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dDet kommer helt enkelt fr\u00e5n min k\u00e4rlek till fotograferingen. Jag \u00e4r bara ivrig att se dagens bilder. Jag gillar att se dem och t\u00e4nka: \u00c4r det en portfolio-bild?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dKanske finns det en person i bilden med ett visst uttryck. Kanske \u00e4r kompositionen geometriskt tillfredsst\u00e4llande. Kanske har tiden p\u00e5 dygnet och v\u00e4derf\u00f6rh\u00e5llandena gjort att ljuset har fallit perfekt. However, it is often impossible to convey everything through words alone, which is why I chose photography as my primary medium. The starting point was REALA ACE. It\u2019s a deliberately understated, almost restrained simulation, and that\u2019s precisely what makes it relevant for urban photography. It doesn\u2019t force colours, doesn\u2019t dramatise scenes, and respects textures. In London, especially around the Southbank, everything is about surfaces: concrete, steel, glass, wet asphalt, low skies, reflections in the Thames. REALA ACE allows this reality to remain intact, without trying to correct it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The choice of settings was built around a simple idea: embracing the cold. The images were taken in the heart of the London winter, under grey, diffuse, often uniform light. By shifting the white balance toward cooler, bluish tones and reducing the presence of reds, I aimed to reproduce this visual temperature. The city appears more mineral, more distant, but also more truthful. The people photographed are not isolated from their environment; they are part of it. They move through the city in harmony with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrast plays an important role. London is a city of passage: people crossing, lingering briefly, then disappearing. By deepening the SHADOWS while keeping HIGHLIGHTS under control, shapes take precedence over details. Silhouettes stand out, bodies become graphic elements within the architecture. The DR200 setting is essential here: it makes it possible to retain both bright skies and fa\u00e7ades, as well as dark areas under bridges or around brutalist buildings, without crushing the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colour is intentionally restrained. London is not devoid of colour, but it appears in touches: a coat, a sign, a reflection, something in motion. By reducing overall saturation, these elements naturally stand out when they appear. Strong COLOR CHROME adds density to mid-tones, gives weight to materials, and reinforces the sense of a \u201csolid\u201d city. Boosting the blues supports the overall atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I slightly reduced clarity to avoid an overly digital harshness. The city is already full of sharp angles and hard textures, there\u2019s no need to add more. This subtle softness helps preserve fluidity, especially in scenes with movement: hurried walkers, skaters, blurred passers-by. Grain is present, discreet, like a texture, to emphasize a natural city that is never perfectly smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of these images were taken around the Southbank: a space that is both open and brutal, where people coexist with architecture without necessarily stopping to engage with it. Skaters on concrete, passers-by beneath buildings, silhouettes lost in volumes too large for them. What interested me was the silent interaction between Londoners and their city: how they move through it, occupy it, and gradually make it their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living in Vancouver, light and colour are often limited. muted skies, muted streets, concrete surfaces. Because of that, I\u2019ve learned to appreciate light and colour more, not less. When they appear, even subtly, they matter. Soft, di\ufb00used light has become something I pay attention to instinctively, not because it is impressive, but because oftentimes it is rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why I Built This FS Recipe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I created “CLOCKWISE ACE” to support how I actually photograph. I wanted a FS RECIPE that stays close to reality while allowing everyday scenes to feel considered and intentional. I chose REALA ACE as the base because it already carried a sense of balance and restraint. It felt neutral without being \ufb02at, and calm without feeling detached. Rather than reshaping it into something else, I treated it as a foundation that could be gently re\ufb01ned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal was never to impose a look. It was to let light, colour, and texture behave naturally, especially in environments where nothing is exaggerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaping “CLOCKWISE ACE”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The adjustments I made to REALA ACE were minimal and deliberate. Highlights were toned down and shadows lifted to soften overall contrast. This allows tones to transition more gently and keeps images from feeling tense or overly de\ufb01ned. Colour was restrained slightly so it remains present without overwhelming the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of this softer contrast, I normally compose my images about one third to two thirds of a stop brighter. That exposure approach works with the FS RECIPE, allowing mid tones and subtle colour to settle naturally while preserving detail across the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“CLOCKWISE ACE” is not about adding character. It is about removing friction between what I see and how it is rendered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding Attention in the Everyday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I enjoy creating images that catch attention immediately. What makes them noticeable, however, is not spectacle, but where they come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the images I make are crafted by noticing small things in everyday life. A shift in light. A colour relationship. A moment that would normally pass without being acknowledged. They stand out because they exist within the mundane, not outside of it. Soft, di\ufb00used light plays a big role in that. It allows details to surface quietly and colours to relate to each other honestly. “CLOCKWISE ACE” supports this by staying responsive rather than dominant, present without overpowering the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A FS Recipe for Daily Carry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“CLOCKWISE ACE” was built for daily use. soft days, window light, streets walked without a destination, interiors lived in rather than styled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It re\ufb02ects how I approach photography as a whole. Carrying a camera. Noticing what is already there. Appreciating light and colour precisely because they are not guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By staying close to REALA ACE and adjusting only what was necessary, this FS RECIPE became a tool that supports attention rather than replacing it. When the simulation fades into the background, what remains is the everyday scene, held carefully in soft light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I photograph, my attention often turns to the atmosphere that surrounds fleeting moments of everyday life\u2014the impressions shaped by light, and the quiet temperature of the spaces themselves. The subtle resonance that can be felt without explanation is, perhaps, the very reason I continue to make photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People sometimes say that my photographs resemble me. In a way, that phrase has come to feel like the most accurate way to describe my work. To me, photography is ultimately a mirror that reflects the inner world of the person behind the camera. A photograph carries not only the scene itself, but also the photographer\u2019s way of seeing\u2014their attitude and sensibility\u2014quietly embedded within the frame. Rather than adding more, I have gradually come to search for a sense of simplicity. Through that process, my photographs have naturally found their own inner direction. Perhaps each image quietly reflects my gaze, deepening little by little over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that sense, PRO Neg. Std felt closely aligned with the intention behind this work. With this FS RECIPE, I wanted to express the atmosphere of subjects, landscapes, and spaces in a quieter, more contemplative way. Instead of pushing saturation or creating dramatic contrast, I was drawn to the way it gently softens color and balances the tones with restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even under strong light, its soft density prevents the image from becoming harsh. This allowed me to render the natural texture of the subject without exaggeration, while preserving the quiet, mist-like stillness that flows through the entire scene. The process of discovering a resonance between my own way of seeing and the character of this FS RECIPE ultimately became the most meaningful part of this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
