Bryan Minear\u2019s own love has long been landscape photography \u2013 showcasing classic natural elements in all their atmospheric beauty. More recently, however, he\u2019s felt the draw of more detailed storytelling.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contained within the images of his new series, Traveler, viewers will recognize golden sunset light, beautifully compressed desert dunes, and a gentle gradient of sky above. What\u2019s new is a small figure on the horizon. In subsequent frames, we see more closely a pint-sized spaceman moving through the now unearthly topography of White Sands National Park. Through a helmet, he gazes longingly outwards, the sands of time drifting ceaselessly beneath him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was not only Bryan\u2019s most ambitious project to date, but an opportunity to expand with new creative tools. But it wasn\u2019t until this recent creative spark that an entire project of stunning visuals and emotive themes fell into place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat first photo in 2020 was the strangest thing,\u201d Bryan continues. \u201cI dreamed the exact image I went on to photograph: my son in his astronaut costume, with a deep blue sky behind him and the sun reflected in his visor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter that, the focus shifted. As he got older, we were able to communicate in ways we couldn\u2019t at that time. I\u2019m forever inspired by his childlike wonder as he discovers the world and experiences new things. It became apparent to me how much we lose as we grow up \u2013 and everything came together. Within this project, the backdrop of White Sands serves as something of a character itself. But before it was depicted in specific ways, it had to be chosen carefully.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom a practicality standpoint, I chose New Mexico because we needed somewhere warm, with clear skies and long days,\u201d Bryan reveals. \u201cCreatively, I\u2019ve always loved sand dunes. That\u2019s the landscape which speaks to me the most, especially when photographing with a telephoto lens. I love being able to compress those layers together and isolate elements.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this was no ordinary telephoto. GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR is GFX System\u2019s longest lens to date. To me, that symbolizes a great big world full of potential. The compression of a telephoto lens is the only way to do that. It was also huge in letting me play with exciting compositions, like framing the astronaut inside the moon. Knowing what I had in mind \u2013 and seeing what I got \u2013 I couldn\u2019t have completed this project without GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose early ideas also included an unusual 65:24 vertical panorama,\u201d Bryan adds, continuing on to the significance of GFX100S II. \u201cPlanning Traveler, I found these incredible old Chinese landscapes painted on vertical scrolls. Without this sensor, I doubt I could have done it in-camera \u2013 but thanks to the huge quality available, I could create a visual ode to something I was inspired by right there in the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project, I hope, will be part of my legacy as a photographer. Obviously, you want the best image quality possible for that. GFX100S II introduces X-Processor 5, with its rapid AI-driven subject detection autofocus, and improved in-body image stabilization up to 8.0 stops \u2013 all within a lightweight package. Bryan found all three of paramount importance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a landscape photographer, I carry a tripod, but prefer to work more freely,\u201d Bryan explains. \u201cI like to push it as far as I can in terms of going into darkness handheld. I was immediately blown away by discovering I could handhold a 500mm lens and go down to 1\/20 sec shutter speeds, getting sharp images. For those moments, subject tracking performed incredibly. I watched GFX100S II follow him across the screen far better than I ever expected a larger format camera could.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFinally, the price you typically pay for a setup like this is size and weight. You have to ask yourself, how am I going to pack everything I need to accomplish what I\u2019m setting out to do, but not break my back doing it? You can\u2019t have a 50lb bag when you\u2019re hiking around sand dunes. Exploring new creative ground is daunting \u2013 especially for a photographer so established in a niche. Through his bold attitude and a little help from GFX System\u2019s latest additions, he\u2019s taken not a small step, but a giant leap.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to branch out and make images unlike anything I\u2019d created before,\u201d Bryan concludes. \u201cA lot went into giving the little astronaut life and forming a compelling, fantastical narrative. I poured all my effort into location, timing, position, and direction. It was nice not to think about how my gear was performing on top of all that because GFX100S II and GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR were handling everything.
