He looks for texture and personality. Real skin. Real people. Then he adds subtle details that make you stop and look twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always liked portraits,\u201d Juan says, \u201cbut in the last year and a half, I found my style \u2013 what I would call realistic surrealism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a phrase he returns to often, but the idea itself is more grounded than it sounds. Juan isn\u2019t interested in heavy manipulation or flashy effects. His work starts in reality, then shifts slightly through color, contrast, or a carefully placed element that introduces tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a mixture of portraits of real people that show real textures of skin, with a little element of something whimsical,\u201d he explains. \u201cJust a pop of color or something interesting that grabs the eye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most recently, he\u2019s been doing so with an in-camera look of his own devising. He approaches each session as a collaboration shaped by the person in front of the camera. \u201cI don\u2019t like to force a pose,\u201d he says. \u201cI like to work with who they are, try to show who they are as a person, then implement my ideas into that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This mindset carries through his process, from how he engages with his subjects to how he finishes an image. The goal isn\u2019t polish or perfection \u2013 it\u2019s connection. \u201cIt feels personal,\u201d Juan says. \u201cThat\u2019s what matters to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That focus on the individual is tangible in the final images. Nothing is overly smoothed or sanitized. But the setting isn\u2019t what defines the work \u2013 it\u2019s the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI mainly work with natural lighting,\u201d he says. \u201cNone of my photos have artificial lighting.\u201d Natural light reinforces the realism Juan is drawn to and keeps attention on the subject rather than the setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of people rely heavily on lights and technology,\u201d he explains. \u201cFor me, part of what makes my photos special is that they can be achieved with just the camera, the subject, and a cool idea.\u201d Natural light requires patience and awareness. His custom look is built on PRO Neg. Std and designed with skin tones in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI focus a lot on people\u2019s skin and how that comes off in a photo,\u201d he says. \u201cI wanted skin tones that felt real while still having the contrasty, punchy look I like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PRO Neg. Std gave him a neutral starting point. \u201cIt feels like a canvas you can build on,\u201d Juan explains. \u201cIt\u2019s clean and not overly saturated.\u201d That restraint is deliberate. \u201cI don\u2019t like photos that are too colorful,\u201d he says. \u201cI prefer them a little more muted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, he makes targeted adjustments to shape the look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strong, large grain adds texture and a subtle film feel. Highlights are lowered and Shadows raised for crisper contrast. Color is pushed slightly for impact without oversaturation. SHARPNESS and CLARITY are reduced to avoid a brittle digital edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a big fan of grain,\u201d Juan says. \u201cIt adds to the texture of the skin.
