The tropics have a way of testing both your gear and your creative decisions. Dense rainforests conceal cascading waterfalls that run into meandering creeks, feeding rivers that eventually open out onto expansive beaches. Blue skies can turn ink-black and then break into colour-filled rainbows in the time it takes to recompose a frame. Wildlife moves through this environment dressed in deep greens, wet blacks, electric blues, and vivid flecks of orange and red. It is both restrained and intensely colourful, and above all, unpredictable.
I wanted a Film Simulation that could handle that range without simplifying it or pushing everything toward a single look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the core of this FS RECIPE is ASTIA, a Film Simulation I\u2019ve always gravitated toward for its balance. ASTIA doesn\u2019t shout. It sits comfortably between neutral and expressive, offering gentle contrast and natural colour separation. Highlights roll off smoothly, and tones remain controlled without feeling flat. In an environment like the tropics \u2014 where scenes can move from dark and enclosed to bright and chaotic in seconds \u2014 that flexibility becomes essential rather than optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, I pushed the look to better reflect the tropical monsoon conditions we found ourselves working in. The combination of COLOR CHROME EFFECT set to STRONG and COLOR CHROME FX BLUE set to STRONG plays a significant role here. This is where the richness comes from. Greens deepen without becoming overpowering, blues retain their weight in skies and water, and saturated colours hold together even when the light becomes harsh. Rather than increasing saturation, the goal is to give colour more presence and depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrast was the next consideration. With DYNAMIC RANGE set to DR400, I\u2019m actively protecting highlight detail. In rainforest shooting, highlights are fragile \u2014 sunlit leaves, reflective water, broken patches of sky \u2014 and once they clip, they\u2019re gone. DR400 provides that safety net, but on its own darker scenes can suddenly flatten to grey. By adding HIGHLIGHT +1 and SHADOWS +1.5, I reintroduce contrast with intent. SHADOWS deepen and add weight, HIGHLIGHTS retain their impact, and the final image feels more dimensional without losing detail. The result is contrast with control, rather than contrast for its own sake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve also added COLOUR +2 and SHARPNESS +2. On paper, those settings can sound aggressive, but in practice they suit the environment. The added colour works in harmony with the COLOR CHROME EFFECT rather than competing with them, and the extra sharpness helps fine detail \u2014 feathers, scales, bark textures \u2014 stand out, particularly in the softer, filtered light common under rainforest canopy and clouds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I appreciate most about this profile is that it isn\u2019t overly specific. It carries a clear mood \u2014 darker, richer, slightly cinematic \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t force every image into the same visual corner. Wildlife photographs remain natural. Landscapes stay believable. The look feels intentional straight out of camera without feeling restrictive or over-defined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a place like the Daintree Rainforest, where atmosphere already does much of the heavy lifting, that balance matters. This ASTIA-based FS RECIPE allows the rainforest to express its own drama \u2014 I\u2019m shaping what\u2019s already there, rather than imposing something on top of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
