Shooting Set-up
Rotate the rear dial to change the shutter speed. Press the top FN Mode button to toggle between M (Manual) shutter speed or A (Auto) which is Aperture Priority Mode. This function can be assigned to a different FN button by holding down the DISP./BACK button for 3 secs if desired.
The MENU OK button is used to access deeper levels of camera functionality beyond what is offered by function buttons, dials, and switches.
- Category menu tabs are what you use to change capture settings. Push left on the FOCUS STICK to scroll by tab (so you don’t have to scroll through every function to get to the next page), and press right on the FOCUS STICK or SELECTOR BUTTON to access desired features and MENU OK to select.
- The wrench icon indicates SET UP and features settings including Power Management, Button/Dial Setting and Screen Set-Up. Choose DISP. CUSTOM SETTING from the SCREEN SET-UP menu to select what information shows on the EVF/LCD.
- Finally, the MY MENU is a customized menu that you create based on your most frequently accessed menu items. Add and rank to move them in any order you like and remove them under USER SETTING in the SET UP menu. If items are added to the “My Menu”, then My Menu will be the default (with full menu access still available).
Press the DRIVE Mode Dial Lock button around the selection collar to the left of the EVF to unlock it for rotation. In either STILL or MULTI modes, pressing the DRIVE button will bring up a sub-menu for shooting choices such as Focus Bracketing, Multi Exposure, Continuous Shooting and more. Further options for drive modes can be found under MENU OK > SHOOTING SETTING (AE BKT SETTING, FILM SIMULATION BKT, FOCUS BKT) or a shortcut can be assigned to a FUNCTION button.
The photometry/metering setting determines how the camera meters exposure. On the GFX100, select it by pressing MENU OK > SHOOTING SETTING > PHOTOMETRY. This can also be assigned to the Q MENU or a FUNCTION BUTTON.
Note: When the FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING is turned on, choosing different PHOTOMETRY types will be disabled.
The AE-L button allows you to lock exposure in a specific part of the scene, allowing you to recompose while maintaining the exposure. Auto Exposure Lock is also linked to shutter button pressing, but can be unlinked in the Menu OK>SETUP>BUTTON DIAL SETTINGS.
The AF ON button initiates autofocus in all FOCUS MODES including AF-S, AF-C, and Manual. Autofocus will still be attached to the SHUTTER button, but can be removed by MENU OK > SET UP > BUTTON DIAL SETTINGS> SHUTTER AF > AF-S or AF-C. This will remove AF from the shutter button when turned off and can be isolated to AF-S, AS-C, or both.
The DISP BACK button allows you to select how you’d like information displayed on the LCD and/or EVF. You can customize the information being displayed in SET UP > SCREEN SET-UP > DISP. CUSTOM SETTING.
The maximum flash sync speed is 1/125th for standard flash types. For higher shutter speeds you will need to use High Speed Sync which is offered by most major flash systems including Profoto, Elinchrom and Godox. A Fujifilm compatible trigger will be needed for TTL and HSS operation.
Go to the menu and then CONNECTION SETTING and set PC CONNECTION MODE to USB AUTO. Connect the camera to your computer via USB-C and it will automatically be detected. Then launch your software of choice. In some software, additional selections may be necessary in Preferences or other software menus.

Focusing Modes
Focus Point Location and Size
The size of the active focusing area used by your GFX100 can be changed and moved around the frame. In the camera’s Q Menu, choose from Single Point (highly selective), Zone (for erratically moving subjects), Wide/Tracking (uses the whole frame), or ALL (allows for selection of Single Point to Wide/Tracking without the need of using the Q Menu) using the rear command dial. You might also want to set up a function button for quicker access.
To move the active point or zone, or change its size:
- Move or press the Focus Stick.
- Move the Focus Stick to shift the focus point/area up, down, left, or right.
- Rotate the rear command dial to change the size of the focus point/area.
- Press MENU OK or half press the shutter release button.
TIP: When in Single Point AF Area, select MENU OK > AF/MF SETTING > NUMBER OF FOCUS POINTS > 425 Points to maximize the number of AF points you can select (Only in Single Point AF).
TIP: Switch on AF+MF from the AF/MF SETTING menu (Page 2) and you’ll be able to focus manually just by turning the lens focus barrel – no change of focus mode necessary.
TIP: Did you know that double-pressing the Focus Stick while adjusting the focus point moves it back to the center of the frame?
Making the Most of Manual Focus
When you’re focusing manually, the GFX100 offers all kinds of focusing aids to help you nail critical focus.
- Put the camera in M focus mode using the focus mode selector, then press MENU OK, and navigate to the AF/MF SETTING menu.
- Scroll down to MF ASSIST and choose from DIGITAL SPLIT IMAGE, DIGITAL MICROPRISM, and FOCUS PEAK HIGHLIGHT. For Peaking, it’s recommended to choose LOW for best accuracy.
- Switch on FOCUS CHECK from the AF/MF SETTING menu and the camera will enlarge a central portion of the scene as soon as you turn the manual focus ring.
TIP: for shortcut access to DIGITAL SPLIT IMAGE or FOCUS PEAK HIGHLIGHT, press and hold the rear rotary dial until the desired focusing aide appears; press and hold again to change it. A quick press of the sub-command dial brings up the FOCUS MAGNIFICATION for fine-tuning your focus.
Shooting Video
When the GFX100 is switched from stills to video mode, the Movie Settings in the standard Menu will be brought up first, unless the user has added items to their MY MENU.
Picking the Right Settings
The first thing to decide is which resolution and frame rate settings to use. You’ll find these options in the MOVIE SETTING > MOVIE MODE menu.
- 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution offers the sharpest quality on the GFX100. However, compression choices also affect overall output quality.
- Full HD 1080p resolutions take up less room on the camera’s SD card.
- Frame rates of 24p, 25p, or 29.97p are fine for most normal applications. 24p is sometimes favored by creative filmmakers for its Hollywood look and feel.
- Footage captured at frame rates of 59.94p or 50p can capture motion more smoothly. Plus, when played back at normal speeds (30fps or 25fps) during editing, it delivers silky-smooth slow motion.
Did you know 25p and 50p frame rates are best for European countries, while 29.97p and 59.94p are more suited to the USA?
Exposure Settings for Cinematic Video
Here’s a set of standard settings you can use in manual (M) shooting mode that will create great-looking, cinematic-style video.
- Choose a frame rate – 24fps is a standard used in the movie industry and has a very top-end look and feel.
- Select a shutter speed that is roughly double the frame rate you’re using, so each frame is exposed for 50% of the time. For example, if you’re shooting at 24fps, pick a shutter speed of 1/50 sec.
- Select the aperture you need for the required depth-of-field.
- Adjust the camera’s ISO sensitivity to get the proper exposure.
Continuous Focusing with Video
Switch to AF-C using the focus mode selector and the GFX100 will adjust focusing as you film, tracking people around the frame if Face Detection is switched on. You can turn this on from the AF/MF SETTING > FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING menu. (You can also assign this to the Q Menu.) You can choose from two focus areas: MULTI, which uses the whole frame and focuses on the closest object to the camera, and AREA, which lets you be more selective. Find this in MOVIE SETTING > MOVIE AF MODE.
