Macro lenses reveal a world that often goes unnoticed. By helping you make photos at close distances, they can transform small subjects into frame-filling images. Whether you’re exploring intricate natural forms or carefully arranged still life, macro photography is a uniquely immersive way to interrogate your surroundings.
While often associated with close-up work, macro lenses are highly versatile. Many double as excellent portrait or short telephoto lenses, making them valuable additions to any set-up. For users of both X Series and GFX System cameras, Fujifilm’s macro options are designed to help uncover detail and create images with real impact.
What does macro mean?
Macro photography is often associated with close-up work, but distance alone doesn’t define this genre. ‘Macro’ refers to how large your subject appears in the frame, which is determined by magnification rather than proximity – and can be achieved in different ways depending on your lens.
Magnification defines the relationship between a subject’s real-world size and the size it is projected onto the camera’s sensor. A lens capable of 1x magnification will reproduce a subject at life-size – meaning a 5mm-long subject is rendered as 5mm long on the sensor. At 0.5x magnification, that same subject would appear at half the size.
Many macro lenses achieve this by focusing very close, but strictly speaking, maximum magnification is a function of a lens’s focal length and minimum focusing distance. This means different lengths of lens can achieve similar results from different working distances.
How to choose a macro lens
Choosing the right macro lens depends largely on what you plan to photograph.
Maximum magnification is the first specification to consider, as it determines how large your subject can appear in the frame. From there, minimum focusing distance becomes important, as it defines how close you’ll need to get to achieve that magnification.
For controlled environments such as studio still life, a shorter minimum focusing distance could help, allowing you to work very close to your subject. For more sensitive or unpredictable subjects, such as insects or small animals, a longer working distance might be best, giving you space while still achieving the desired level of detail.
The sensor size factor
Sensor size doesn’t affect a lens’s magnification. A lens capable of 1x magnification will always project a subject onto the sensor at life-size, regardless of the camera used.
However, sensor size does affect how large that subject appears within the frame. Because X Series sensors are smaller than GFX System sensors, the same subject will fill more of the frame at the same magnification. Conversely, the larger GFX sensor will show more of the surrounding scene, making the subject appear smaller within the composition.
Understanding this difference helps when choosing a system for macro work, particularly if considerations of framing and perceived magnification are key to your work.
X Series Macro Lenses
XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro

Macro extension tubes
To push your macro photography even further, extension tubes are a simple and effective way to increase magnification. By placing a spacer between lens and camera body, they reduce the minimum focusing distance so you can make photos closer to your subject and fill more of the frame.
This comes with a trade-off. As magnification increases, so does the need to work at very close distances, which can make lighting and composition more challenging. For that reason, extension tubes are best suited to controlled environments or subjects that won’t be disturbed by your presence.
There are two extension tubes for the X Series (an 11mm and 16mm option) and two for the GFX System (18mm and 45mm). The longer your extension tube, the closer you can get to your subject. This capability dramatically expands the macro utility of standard lenses. For example, using the Macro Extension Tube MCEX-16, the FUJINON XF33mmF1.4 R LM WR can be increased from 0.15x to 0.66x magnification, while the FUJINON XF18mmF1.4 R LM WR can exceed life-size at 1.05x.
