“The Depth and Brilliance of Silver Halide”
In analog film photography, it was common practice to make black & white photographs with an orange or red filter in front of the lens. By applying filters in digital photography, Film Simulations continue this practice to control the look of the image.
For those who believe that the best part of monochrome is the contrast between strong shadows and vivid highlights, the red filter is your ally because it absorbs the widest range of wavelengths and is very effective at emphasizing contrast. As it darkens the sky while maintaining the brightness of white clouds, the sky will appear richly dark – almost black when viewed in normal light.
