Based in Manhattan, New York City, Penumbra Foundation champions the rising and recognized voices of photography in myriad ways. Focusing on underlying histories, the non-profit seeks to impart knowledge of tangible, ‘handmade’ technologies to a wider audience.
Whether it’s youth programs, exhibitions, lectures or residencies, Penumbra advocates a legacy-first perspective. The camera has limitless capability. Mastering this promise begins with a robust understanding of its roots.
Founded in 1998, an even-handed mix of physical and digital approaches ensures that comprehensive understanding – a gateway to unlocking potential – is always foregrounded.
Homing in on programs that support youth engagement, Penumbra currently runs a variety of internship initiatives. Partnering with Fujifilm, one such course provides students with invaluable insights, garnered through direct experience with reputable artists.
Another centers around disadvantaged NY kids, providing marginalized groups with resources and expert instruction – a powerful outlet for discovering their artistic and professional voices.
Dedicated spaces encompass a whole host of equipment and resources, including rental workplaces, a traditional darkroom, galleries and a tintype studio.
Each year, Penumbra runs over 100 workshops, crystalizing its educational concerns. Processes include Daguerreotype, Wet-Collodion, Risograph Photobooks, Studio Lighting, History of Photography, Professional Writing for Photographers, Long Term Projects, and more.
Impassioned in its ethos, Penumbra centers its efforts around all things imaging, regardless of background or topical context.

A love of image making runs deep in the Berliner family. A native New Yorker, Geoffrey’s father was an artist, photographer and public school teacher in the city. His grandfather worked for The New York Times as a photographer and photo retoucher. After leaving Harvard University with a master’s degree in religion, Geoffrey started his own business. After several years, the call of photography urged greater involvement in these practices. From here, he set up Penumbra.
A photographer and editor, Leandro founded the residency programs at Penumbra Foundation. He also organizes the Penumbra Artist Series and directs the exhibition space. Leandro has collaborated with numerous photographic institutions, including W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, Errata Editions, and the International Center of Photography, among others.
