THE RAINBOW IS UNDERSTIMATED

Piero Percoco, known in social media under the pseudonym ‘the rainbow is underestimated’, is a photographer and artist whose work as a street photographer is mainly positioned between Fine Art, editorial projects.

“I love to explore and delve into elements of the everyday that seem apparently trivial. I like the idea of giving them a new light through my photographs.”

Piero Percoco approached the world of photography and visual arts in 2017, initially shooting only with his phone camera; actively continuing to post images on Instagram he soon got feedback through major magazines such as New York Times, New Yorker. So, he started to take everything more seriously: creating visual content turned into a real job.

“At the beginning of my journey I was inspired by photographers like Stephen Shore, William Eggleston. Lately, however, I draw a lot of inspiration from looking closely at the world around me, particularly nature. I spend several hours observing the landscape.” As Piero Percoco states, taking us back to the romantic 19th century vision of painting en plein air.

However, Percoco’s gaze is totally contemporary, realistic and conceptual at the same time. His works deal with the reality of everyday life through a dreamy, idealised dimension.

FUJIFILM KIT

“In 2013 I purchased my first camera: FUJIFILM X- Pro1 combined with XF50mmF2 R WR fixed lens. From then on, I have always used Fujifilm, moving to the X-T2 and later to the X-T5, always working with fixed lenses. My latest purchase was the XF30mmF2.8 R LM macro lens, which for me is the ideal lens for the direction my work is moving in.

One of the reasons I love Fujifilm cameras is precisely because the SOOC files already have a colour that I really like, plus the VELVIA film simulation is very close to the way I see the world in colour. “

FUJIFILM X-T50: let’s focus on the project

“When I was approached by Fujifilm, I was really excited. The idea of producing a project with the new X-T50 simply thrilled me. Being familiar with Fujifilm cameras, I could easily concentrate on the creative part, without worrying too much about the technicalities. I found the X-T50 really amazing because it is very compact, a factor that I immediately appreciated, along with the built-in flash which for me is fantastic – small but powerful!

I really liked the design: from the grip to the simulation dial which allows you to focus more on the colour rendition of the photo, a key factor for me. I really think it is the ideal camera for my needs: a very compact and light body (I was able to take it everywhere with me, in my jacket pocket!) with a very high file quality, thanks to the new 40MP 5th generation sensor is incredible, I can work a lot on colours and details. Also, this allows me to make quality prints, which is important for my fine artwork, and is really amazing considering the size of the camera!

I am currently continuing to work with X-T50 and looking for summer to come to capture even more colorful details of the summer season.”

For macro photography in nature, I mainly used the XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro lens. Initially, I also used the XF50mmF1.0 R WR and XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro which, however, are too unbalanced for the compact size of the X-T50, even though the performance is incredible, the lens then becomes uncomfortable to carry. For this camera, a small, fixed lens or a compact zoom lens is ideal.
